It was Palm Sunday in 1461 and 100,000 soldiers gathered on the fields of Towton. The Battle of Towton has the dubious distinction of being probably the largest and bloodiest battle on English soil. Fought for ten hours an estimated 25,000 soldiers lost their lives while fighting in a snowstorm. The Yorkist army achieved a decisive victory over their Lancastrian opponents. As a result, Edward IV deposed the Lancastrian Henry VI and secured the English throne. On this investigation we head to St Mary's church, a redundant Anglican chapel that sits in the middle of the Townton battlefield.
