From 15th to 17th century, Europe was beneath the shadow of ignorance and superstition. Towns were underdeveloped and people often lived near woodland, The fear of wolves was an ever-present nightmare. Misunderstood mental illness and physical afflictions, coupled with proximity to wolf packs and their semi-regular attacks on human settlements, eventually gave way to the first suggested instances of human/wolf monsters and the legends which would instil themselves in the collective conscious for centuries to come.
