Built in 1847 by a man named William Cary, the hotel was designed with elegance, state of the art equipment, and the comfort of the wealthy in mind as they would journey to and from the big cities of California at the time. The entire building became the centerpiece and safe haven for the town, during the ever changing times. Earning the nickname “ The jewel of Placerville “ and solidifying its place in history as the nicest hotel in the gold country. So much history has passed through its doors, everything from death and tragedy to happy and lively memories, longtime residents who spent their entire lives living in one of the apartment like rooms, or countless faces of the rich and famous who just came to visit. Over the years all this history and energy has reported become the reason why this hotel is said to be one of the most haunted places in the state! Reports of strange noises and voices coming from empty rooms, footsteps pacing up and down the staircase, the 1926 elevatory supposedly operating on its own. Even people seeing full bodied apparitions and even communicating with them. Most famously that of a man who was killed on the staircase after insulting a mans wife. This place has a reputation of being so active that this activity has become commonplace to the staff and visitors. Some even say that somewhere on the property there is a portal to hell… We have heard so many stories about what goes on here once the sun sets and we had to go and experience it for ourselves.
